April / May 2010
Message from St Andrews Links Golf Practice Centre closures: The driving range area at the Golf Practice Centre will close from Monday 24 May due to preparations for The Open Championship. The short game area will remain open and coaching and custom fit services will also be available. The facility will return to its full working capacity approximately mid-August depending on the timescale involved in the clearing of The Open Championship tented village from this area.
Message from John C Grant - Director of Golf
Buggies on Eden Course: Following some work during the winter to enable a safer route over the Eden Course, senior citizens and golfers with medical certificates will be able to use buggies on this course, thus meaning that all courses on the Links are now accessible with a buggy.
Strathtyrum/Eden Starter's Box: A new Starter's Box will be introduced for the Eden and Strathtyrum courses which will be situated a short distance from the 1st tee of the Eden Course. The new box should help improve the procedure for golfers checking in for both courses and will work in the same way as The Castle Course. Links ticket holders who only need to swipe their ticket will be able to go straight to the Starters' Box. Golfers, who have a fee to pay for guests, trollies or hire clubs etc, will do so at to the reception desk in the Eden Clubhouse. It is hoped that this will provide a more straightforward check-in experience for both ticket holders and visitors alike.
Play from White Tees: Another change from 1 April will be the option for Links ticket holders to play from the white tees on all the Links courses. Visitors will also be able to play from the white tees on all courses except the Old Course where they will have to hold a single figure handicap. We will closely monitor any effects this change has on the pace of play and Course Rangers will have the ability to move golfers onto the yellow tees, if they lose their position on the course. From the greenkeeping point of view, the wear and tear will be spread around the teeing areas and should not cause damage to the traditional medal tee areas.
